Research interests include: hybridization, polyploidy (euploidy, allopolyploidy and aneuploidy), apomixis, phenotypic plasticity, (sky) island biogeography, Claytonia lanceolata species complex (Montiaceae), alpine and desert species of Boechera (Brassicaceae), Androsace septentrionalis (Primulaceae), Silene verecunda species complex (Caryophyllaceae) and the alpine flora of the San Bernardino Mountains High Country.
